The Lab, the map, and Gravel9 Radio
Research that helps people investigate a place—and helps radio tell them what is happening there.
I am building a way to investigate a place through its sources and hear it through its programming. Digital Sidewalk Lab develops the observation methods. The Gravel9 Master Map is being built to organize information by place and time. Gravel9 Radio is the listening and programming product that can draw on selected, permitted sources.
The relationship is practical. A reading or recording becomes more useful when someone can tell where it came from, when it was collected, what it describes, and how it may be used. Those details support both investigation on a map and a responsible account on air.
The Lab develops the methods
Digital Sidewalk Lab is the research unit of Pip Projects, Inc. Its work includes the published Digital Sidewalk framework, civic and environmental observation methods, field experiments, and tools for keeping evidence separate from interpretation.
The research program has its own questions. How do people learn through participation in a place? What can a low-cost sensor reliably observe? What additional measurement would help resolve a disagreement? Papers, datasets, and open tools are outputs of that work, whether or not they become part of a commercial product.
The map organizes the sources
The Master Map is intended to bring infrastructure, environmental observations, community information, and other place-based sources into a shared geographic and historical record. Each source needs its time, coverage, provenance, and permitted use attached.
That would let someone investigate both what is known about a place and what is missing. A camera outage, an absent sensor, and a restricted source should be distinguishable. The earlier field-test console is a precursor to this broader work, rather than a completed version of the Master Map.
Radio gives those sources a listening form
Gravel9 Radio is in development as a human-hosted listening and programming product. The vision is that people can assemble a mix of sources, with clear information about their origins and the rights governing playback or export.
A future locality segment, for example, could combine a host's account with a cleared field recording and selected observations about that place. The map would help organize the source context; the radio would provide the listening experience. This is an intended use, not an operating integration described by this journal.
What readers can use now
The framework article links the published research. The storm account explains a field experiment and its working analysis. The record-design article explains how observations and gaps are represented. The platform article describes the prepared release and the work needed before others can run it.
The next concrete steps are to release a reproducible sensing package, complete an outside installation, and extend observation beyond one site. For prospective collaborators, those are useful starting points: field collection, source organization, and methods that make the record more reliable.
