Before the sidewalk had a name

The observation habit came first. Four projects from 2021 to 2023 show the Lab's method before the framework existed.

The Digital Sidewalk is a framework for noticing how people learn from one another when nobody has called the moment a lesson. Before it had that name, the same habit was already running through four unrelated projects. Reading them together shows what the Lab actually does: it watches a real system, keeps the record, and reports what the record can support.

A statewide dataset, made legible

From 2021 to 2023 I served as sponsor project lead for a three-year data-visualization partnership between the University of Utah's Second Language Teaching and Research Center and the MSIS Capstone Program at the David Eccles School of Business. Each year a capstone team built the platform; my role was to define the questions, secure and structure the statewide data, and carry the result to the program directors. The subject was the Bridge Language Program: students who had come through dual-language immersion in Utah's K–12 schools and then enrolled at the university. The platform joined statewide enrollment records to university majors so that program directors could see a pathway instead of a spreadsheet.

The lesson that survived was about scale mismatch. A school district counts students one way, a university another, and a chart that silently merges the two counts is wrong in a way no reader can see. That problem returns in the Lab's sensing work as the difference between a sensor's footprint and the place a reader assumes it covers.

Free materials, vetted sources

The 2023 Central States Communication Association presentation combined openly licensed educational resources from federally funded sources with free software for multicultural learning materials. The claim was modest: careful selection plus free tools yields usable materials. The method was a curation ledger, with each resource traced to its source and license.

Media as a system with feedback

Two 2021 presentations treated media as systems with feedback rather than as messages. One read Søren Kierkegaard's account of media transformation through economic theology and blockchain governance at the Wyoming Blockchain Stampede. The other analyzed The Hunger Games films through fantasy-theme analysis, asking how a story about surveillance and scarcity organized an audience's shared imagination. A third, at the ACTFL convention, showed instructional video design for K–12 dual-language teaching.

None of these was a sensor project. All of them asked the same question the Lab asks now: what does this record let us say, and what would it take to say more?

Why this is the first entry

A lab that starts its history with its first instrument overstates the instrument. The instruments in this journal arrive in 2026. The method arrived years earlier, in ordinary research work with ordinary constraints. That is the honest place to start.
