The Lab's research program — six areas, one framework, four levels of claim, four ledgers, and the instruments and protocols that connect them.
The Lab's research runs from a framework about how people learn in public to instruments that record the weather. This page describes the program at the level a reader needs to follow the journal.
One framework
The Digital Sidewalk is a framework for entertainment-education grounded in Jane Jacobs's urban sociology, Gordon Pask's theory of interaction between actors, and Mitchell Duneier's sidewalk ethnography. Its three dimensions, movement, characters, and safety, are questions to ask of a real community. It was established in a 2025 dissertation and a 2025 IEEE conference paper.
Four levels and four ledgers
Since August 2026 every record the Lab produces carries a level and lives in a ledger. The level says what kind of claim it is: an atom (one observation), a signal (a noticed change), a pattern (a relationship among signals), or a hypothesis (a proposed explanation). The ledger says what it may be used for: evidence, hypothesis, simulation (marked non-empirical), or observation design. The frame is descriptive; it does not choose what to measure next.
Six research areas
DSL-001 · The Digital Sidewalk. Entertainment-education through orality, sound, and cybernetic feedback in decentralized digital and physical communities.
DSL-002 · Human resilience modeling. Frameworks linking acoustic environments, psychosocial systems, and community cybernetics to resilience outcomes.
DSL-003 · Cybernetics and indirect learning. Pask's interaction of actors applied to transmedia programming and decentralized community infrastructure.
DSL-004 · Transmedia narrative systems. Mass-media persuasion, film rhetoric, and narrative design as social-impact infrastructure for learning communities.
DSL-005 · Civic and environmental sensing. Phone-based sensor networks, blind microphone calibration, observation schemas with explicit missingness, and open-core release. This is the Lab.
DSL-006 · Observation design. Given evidence and competing hypotheses, which measurement is worth taking next. An instrument exists, validated on synthetic agents and shelved until a real ambiguity calls for it.
Physics the Lab uses
Two pieces of physics recur. A bounded-cavity model treats sound in a room, heat in a building envelope, and airflow in a duct with one description of energy spreading and trapping, scaled by a golden-ratio constant α*. A phase-field model in the Allen–Cahn form describes a boundary between two states, such as rain and ice, and the Lab's nested variant with a delay factor β near 0.71 is an open hypothesis about persistence. The constants do not change from one piece of work to the next; the hypothesis is labeled as one.
What is published and what is not
The Lab publishes frameworks, protocols, schemas, datasets with stated limits, and the concept-level mathematics used in the journal. It does not publish detector thresholds, transforms, or provider internals, which sit behind the open platform's detection interface as proprietary providers. Partners who need that layer can ask.
